May 2017 Update Penguin Research

Not many penguins last time. They are off on their winter jaunt now the weather has gone colder. We still have one white penguin on the breakwater but it is maintaining weight so is obviously still able to float.
Some interesting figures.
Last penguin year from May 2016 to April 2017 we “caught”;
[Times caught]   [Number of penguins]
1  ……………………….569
2 ……………………….189
3 ……………………….102
4 …………………………42
5 ………………………….21
6 …………………………..9
7 …………………………..6
8 …………………………..3
9 …………………………..1
That is 942 catches
The penguins that were caught eight or nine times were single males with obviously nothing else to do but wait around to be “caught”.
We micro-chipped 295 penguins.

We saw but could not catch 2574 penguins. Of those “caught” and micro-chipped 131 were chicks so we have 164 previous chicks that were not chipped but have finally been “caught”.
