Penguin Research update March 2017

Recently a dead penguin was found near StKilda pier.
It was first chipped as an adult in 1999 so he had a long life. He was with his partner until 2009 but they only produced 2 chicks. They lived at K.5 all their life.
Most penguins were past moult and hiding deep in their burrow. One was even found mating….bit early!
The penguin at H with no claws on its right foot is alive and well and is now 6 years old.
Not sure if it was the 8 fishermen who caused the penguins to be missing from L to U  or if they have just decided life is better in the middle of the breakwater but only 7 “catches” in that area was very low.
