SUMMARY:Undaria Clean-up Event
DESCRIPTION:Undaria pinatifoda (wakame) is an invasive species of kelp from the northwest Pacific Ocean. It was probably introduced to port Phillip through ballast and hitchhiking on vessels. The main issue with Undaria in Port Phillip Bay is that it takes up space\, limiting opportunities for our native kelps to get a foothold. It then dies back over summer leaving a distinct lack of shelter and food available for our native marine animals. Join us for a morning at the beach where we remove Undaria\, and make space for our native species! \nWhen: Saturday 18th October\nTime: 10am – 12pm\nLocation: Brighton Beach\, corner of Wellington Street and the Esplanade. Look out for Earthcare flags on the beach. \nWhat to bring:\n•Swim crew (snorkel gear and wetsuit)\n•Beach crew (gloves if desired) \nWet weather/water quality: Heavy rain typically means that Port Phillip Bay is not suitable for swimming. Our events will not go ahead in Poor water quality\, according to the EPA. We make the decision the night before. If you have registered via our website you will receive an email notifying you of an event cancellation. We will also announce on our facebook group the night before if the event is cancelled. \nChildren are welcome to join in and help with the counting. \n  \n
