Penguin viewing is currently closed!

Due to the St Kilda Pier redevelopment, the St Kilda Breakwater is temporarily closed.
You can find out more about the redevelopment project here

St Kilda is home to a colony of over 1,400 Little Penguins and attracts many visitors each year.

Earthcare St Kilda has been operating its famous Penguin Guide service since 2008 to enhance the learning experience for local, interstate and overseas visitors while also assisting in minimising the impact of the public on the colony.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, guides were rostered in teams to supervise public penguin viewing on the breakwater every night (including Christmas and New Years Eve).

Penguin Guide duties include:

  • Providing information to visitors about the penguins
  • Minimising the impact of visitors on the colony through education about the use of camera flashes and white light torches, keeping off the rocks and keeping a distance from the penguins

No previous penguin knowledge or experience is required. Earthcare St Kilda will provide all necessary training to new Penguin Guides. More details about Penguin Guiding are given in our Penguin Guide Handbook.

The Future of Penguin Guiding

Penguin Guide applications are currently suspended due to the construction of the new pier. Please keep an eye on this page for future requirements for Penguin Guides, likely to start mid-late 2024, or watch out for updates on our Instagram and Facebook channels.
