Undaria pinatifoda (wakame) is an invasive species of kelp from the northwest Pacific Ocean. It was probably introduced to port Phillip through ballast and hitchhiking on vessels. The main issue with Undaria in Port Phillip Bay is that it takes up space, limiting opportunities for our native kelps to get a foothold. It then dies back over summer leaving a distinct lack of shelter and food available for our native marine animals. Join us for a morning at the beach where we remove Undaria, and make space for our native species!
