Penguin Patrol Excursion

30 June @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

The Penguin Patrol program is a FREE school holiday activity for kids aged 8–12. It’s a fun, handson twopart experience where children learn all about Little Penguins, their homes, and how rubbish and plastic affect the colony and the marine environment. Blending science, creativity, and realworld action, kids get to explore, make things, and discover simple ways to help protect wildlife.

Bookings will open Tuesday 26th May 2026

Workshop – Learn, Create, Protect

Time: 10am – 11:30am

Location: Port Phillip Ecocentre

Children will:

  • Discover how to identify Little Penguins through interactive, hands‑on activities
  • Explore penguin habitat and needs by designing and building their own model burrow
  • Investigate how rubbish threatens penguins and other coastal wildlife
  • Take part in practical activities that inspire action, such as sorting waste, designing a reusable tote bag, and transforming rubbish into something useful

Excursion – Explore, Investigate, Take Action

Location: St Kilda Pier

Children will:

  • Visit a real Little Penguin habitat and connect their incursion learning to the natural world
  • Take part in a beach clean‑up to explore where our waste comes from and analyze what they collect
  • Discuss how everyday choices can prevent waste from reaching our beaches and harming wildlife

There are limited spaces available so get in quick!

Please note:

  • It is preferred that children attend both the workshop and the excursion.
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for drop‑off and pick‑up at each location.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend the excursion. For the incursion, we ask that parents do not remain in the room due to capacity limits.
  • All sessions are fully supervised by Earthcare St Kilda staff and trained volunteers with Working with Children’s Check’s, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for every child.
  • The excursion is not a guaranteed opportunity to see Little Penguins. While there is a chance of spotting one, sightings are rare during the day. If you’re interested in seeing Little Penguins at night, you can book a free guided tour here: https://bookings.penguins.org.au/BookingCat/Availability/?ParentCategory=STKD
  • Further details — including meeting points, what to bring, and what to expect — will be provided upon booking.
