Did you know the humble saltbush, often spotted around Melbourne’s bayside, plays a big role in our local ecosystem? 🌿 Not only is it a hardy, native plant that thrives in salty soils, but it’s also a lifesaver for wildlife. Its dense, low-growing structure helps stabilize sandy areas and prevents erosion, keeping our coastlines healthy.

Fun fact: if you visit the St Kilda penguins, you might catch them collecting saltbush to use in their nests! 🐧💚 It’s the perfect natural material to keep their homes cozy and protected.

Next time you’re out and about, take a closer look at this incredible plant and remember how much it gives back to our environment and wildlife!

♻️ This week was National Recycling Week! ♻️

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to make an individual impact on our planet. It reduces waste, conserves resources, saves energy and reduces pollution.

On our beach clean ups, we regularly see items which could easily have been recycled. Port Phillip Council provides a heap of avenues to ensure we can recycle as much as possible.

Check out your local council website for details on what can be recycled in your area, and help reduce waste ♻️

Spring is here! At the St Kilda Breakwater, Little

Spring is here! At the St Kilda Breakwater, Little penguins are raising their chicks. You might notice the penguin chick’s juvenile brown feathers 🪶 look quite different to their parents’ bright blue waterproof layer.

These two chicks will soon undergo ‘moulting’ where they lose their brown feathers and begin to grow their blue waterproof adult feathers.

🐧 Earthcare AGM 2024! 🐧

Thanks to everyone who attended our AGM last Monday night. It was fantastic to catch up with our members and meet a bunch of passionate community members who also joined us.

We heard from some amazing speakers including Lifi Huang, Rich Pensak and Tia Scott, on Penguin calls, Northern Pacific Seastars and Rakali behaviour. We also had presentations from our members who told us what they have been up to this year. What an amazing list of achievements it was!

The night ended with a trip to see the St Kilda Penguins, where a few of our former guides put on the fluro and gave us their best penguin facts!

Thanks to all those who helped make the event a success, including @royalmelbourneyachtsquadron who allowed us to use their function room.

Meet Lana! 🦜🌿💚🦉

Lana is the president of Earthcare St Kilda and is an ornithologist currently finalising her PhD thesis on hybridisation in birds. 📓

Lana loves spending her time with her two indoor cats, hiking, and is passionate about helping people connect with nature. 🌱

Come meet Lana and the rest of the Earthcare committee at our AGM tomorrow (Monday 28 October, from 7pm at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron). 🔔 There will be some great talks, food and drink, see the St Kilda penguins, and learn about getting involved if you’d like. 🌏 Everyone’s welcome!
